Geraldine Quinn is a witchy woman. Having seen her twice before and been dazzled by her wit and musical skill, I was eagerly anticipating her latest MICF venture, Hex and the City. Quinn frames her songs with a narrative involving being outed as a witch by her 11-year-old niece. This is due to having committed the sins of being single, childless and the only actor in Melbourne not on Neighbours. As the angry mob pursues her to Trades Hall, Quinn sings about her failed acting career, the woes of being a redhead, dodgy boyfriends and an even dodgier housemate, before being saved by a rather literal deus ex machina. This is her slickest show yet and Quinn combines a truly fantastic singing voice with witty lyrics (a triple rhyme is unprintable here but an instant classic) and some entertaining choreography and anecdotes. She uses a range of styles and music, with the highlight being a brilliant pisstake on the 60s doo-wop classic "My Boyfriend's Back" and her comfort level on stage is high as she manages to get a laugh with just a look or held pause.

If I have one complaint, and it's minor, it is that Quinn's guitar skills were not put to full use and there was an abundance of recorded music which just seemed like a shame as she has talent to burn (Memo to any producers out there: give her a bigger venue).

Quinn has been called a "female Tim Minchin" and Hex and the City is further proof that the next male cabaret star will surely be dubbed, "the next Geraldine Quinn".
